How Do I Increase My Websites Alexa Rank?
Your probably reading this post because you’ve recently discovered what your websites alexa ranking is. I bet that now you feel obligated to increase your alexa ranking to show all your friends how awesome your blog truly is. The problem is that you have no clue on how this can be achieved. In this post I will show you different methods to increase your alexa ranking some easier than others.

First off lets talk about how your websites alexa rank is calculated. Your rank is based off how many people visit your website with the alexa toolbar installed. Now keep in mind that the general internet population does not have the toolbar installed aside from web-designers and your average geek. My mother for instance would think that the alexa toolbar is a “porn application.”

So the first thing that you need to do is educate your audience about alexa and convince them to install the toolbar on their browser of choice.
- A great way to let your visitors know about alexa is through a simple post or by installing the alexa rank widget on your site. The widget can be placed in your blogs sidebar and if your visitors click on the widget it will count as them having the alexa toolbar installed.
- When educating your audience I would recommend that you tell them about the alexa extensions that might be available for their current browsers, this way they wont need to install the toolbar and it will keep their browsers less bulky.
- I bet that your a pretty big fan of your own website, which you should be! You are the person who visits your own site the most frequently. Why not make your visits count towards increasing your alexa ranking? Install the alexa toolbar or browser extension and you will notice a difference. This however is most effective when you have an alexa ranking in the millions, through your own visits it will help to bring your alexa ranking into about the 800,000. Beyond this point you can’t just relay on your own visits.

Create content that is focused towards webmasters or the geek at heart
- This step requires a whole lot more effort than simply installing a widget/ toolbar. A great way to get your alexa rank up quickly is to write tutorials for webmasters on how they can improve their blogs in some form. Sure there are plenty of tutorials out there but one more can’t hurt right…
- I would also recommend giving away free website templates that you have designed. This method will give you links back to your website and you will get a ton of bloggers with alexa toolbars installed on their browsers. You give some, you get some.

Socialize
- For your website to increase its alexa rank, you need to attract visitors. If your website is still fairly new its most likely that you are the only person who knows about it with the exception of your few close friends. Basically you need to go and make new friends. People aren’t always going to come to you and say “hay lets be friends mate,” you need to go on forums and social media websites to get people to at least know about your websites existence. Make sure however that you don’t turn into a spammer and go on other blogs comments just to promote you own website.
- I would highly recommend that you make twitter, flickr, facebook, etc., accounts for your blog. This way you can make friends with people in a fun way.
- Make sure that the content/posts on your website are easy to share meaning that you should have social media buttons. If one of your posts gets Dugg or stumbled, that will increase your alexa rank tremendously and it will get you highly recognized.
- Advertising on a website is a great way to get your own blog noticed as well. While this might not be economically suitable for you especially if you just launched your website, it will quickly increase your ranking. You just have to make sure that you find a website that you believe has a large amount of visitors with the alexa toolbar already installed.

Cheat
- There are always a few ways to cheat the system and alexa is no exception. One way for new blogs to gain a better alexa ranking is to use Alexa Auto Surfs. While I can’t guarantee that this will work, you are free to give it a try. Be aware though that alexa ranking constantly changes and if you stop using the auto surfs on your blog your ranking might go down again.

I personally don’t believe in alexa because often it can be inaccurate ( alexa seems to have a biased towards websites that feature webmaster content) but I am forced to worry about my alexa rank because it plays a major factor in what advertisers think of your website. I hope you have found these few techniques helpful. If you have any other recommendation on how to increase a websites alexa rank please leave a comment below.

“hay mate”. Your site is beyond average in terms of existence / PR / Alexa stats. It looks like you started your new media journey with blogger and expanded from there, well done.
And that’s all the purraise you’ll get from this cat. Artists want critique so they can improve, amirite?
Social Media is great, but jumping on the latest trends bandwagon only goes so far. I can tell you through both company (adult orientated marketing consultant) and personal experience that a nagbar of any kind to squeeze a ’2.0 reaction’ out of your visitors serves as a colossal gtfo billboard instead. Magic Contact is the most non-intrusive and it’s purpose doesn’t need explanation on this particular blog. Wibiya however, is a great way to torture browsers with many-a-tab opened, and unless you got anything remotely to CNET status on the table it’s not likely to do you much justice in the 5 to 10k daily visitor range. you’ve got plentiful options to get your guests involved, and repetition (i.e. what’s on the bar besides translate and donate that’s not already being present on the site??) can be -very- annoying.
Lastly, if you maintain focus you can expect double figures PR and -100k Alexa rank by the end of this year, just don’t lay your eggs in too many baskets or outsource some writing to people / community that share your passion.
That concludes your pro bono consultation, take care.
Don’t worry too much about Alexa ranking as it is full of BS!
Alexa.com should put a disclaimer on its website warning people that their data is “For Amusement / Entertainment Use Only” as Alexa rankings CAN be easily manipulated.
